Introductory Memo

In 1973, the Arab oil producers placed an embargo on a group of countries led by the United States. They also cut oil production. Why? The US-led group supported Israel during the Yom Kippur War. Cut to present day. The US-Israel attack on Iran has pushed the world into another oil crisis due to closure of the Strait of Hormuz. On both occasions – the 1970s oil crisis and today – the world gave serious thought to alternative fuel to reduce dependence on Gulf oil. Among the ideas that has survived the decades is green hydrogen. As far as India is concerned, it would be interesting to know where it stands today on the green hydrogen front. India has set an ambitious target of producing 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of green hydrogen annually by 2030. How feasible is it? Let’s examine.
