For more than five decades, one organisation has remained a constant presence whenever India debates Muslim personal law. It has fought court battles, influenced political decisions, opposed major legal reforms and become a familiar voice on issues ranging from triple talaq to the Uniform Civil Code. Yet despite its visibility, there is a basic question many Indians rarely ask: what exactly is this organisation, and how much authority does it actually possess?
