Who was Raja Bhoj, who built the Bhojshala that is at the centre of a raging debate now? The recent (May 2026) verdict of the Madhya Pradesh High Court declaring Bhojshala as a temple dedicated to Vagdevi (Saraswati) has stirred the debate. But, beyond the debate with political and religious overtones, lies the story of Paramara dynasty king – Raja Bhoj. Nearly a thousand years after his reign, his name still survives in proverbs, cities, lakes, temples, languages, and public memory. From the magnificent Bhojshala in Dhar to the massive Bhojeshwar Temple in Bhojpur, from Sanskrit scholarship to hydraulic engineering, Raja Bhoj’s contribution went far beyond kingship. He represented an age where governance, knowledge, spirituality, architecture, and public welfare were deeply interconnected. He was a king who built an intellectual and cultural world nearly a millennium ago.
