One nation, many laws: Does India need UCC?

Few constitutional promises have generated as much debate, hesitation and political caution as the Uniform Civil Code. Envisioned by the framers of the Constitution as a means of ensuring equal civil rights for all citizens, it has remained one of independent India's most discussed yet least implemented reforms. As states such as Uttarakhand move from theory to legislation and Goa's long-standing model continues to offer a working example, the question is no longer whether a common civil framework is possible, but whether India is prepared to embrace it.
