On May 16, 2026, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to The Hague, the Netherlands returned the 11th Century Anaimangalam Copper Plates, also known as the Leiden Plates, to India. More than a diplomatic milestone, this marked the return of a vital civilizational record of the Chola Empire. 

The plates reveal how the Cholas viewed India as a culturally unified civilization, where Sanskrit and Tamil worked together within a shared Dharmic framework. They also challenge modern political narratives surrounding language conflict, anti-Sanatana discourse, and the perceived North-South divide in Indian history.
