Introductory Memo
Political figures from the opposition have been claiming similarities between Nazi Germany under Hitler and present-day India. Derek O’Brien, the quizmaster-turned-politician and an MP from Trinamool Congress (TMC), also engaged in this recently. He wrote an article in ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ on April 10 2026, comparing Nazi Germany under Hitler with today’s Indian government. A look at history turns this comparison into an attempt to create false equivalences. Nazi Germany was all about state-sponsored genocide against Jews. It was planned, legal, and military. In contrast, India is a constitutional democracy. Laws get debated, challenged in court, and subject to public scrutiny. Equating random incidents or policy fights in India with a genocidal regime is not deep analysis. It’s just dramatic framing. Such equivalence weakens real historical understanding instead of strengthening it. Nazi Germany and today’s India are separated by time, history, and texture.
