Since the ceasefire in the United States-Iran war was announced in April 2026 and then in June 2026, a familiar old argument resurfaced. Commentators in Islamabad and some voices abroad say Pakistan is now at the centre of world diplomacy as the mediator of peace in the Gulf. They are projecting India as supposedly isolated after a rough year with Washington DC. It is a narrative-based story, and like many narratives, it skips the hard parts. 

Let’s ask a simple question that many headlines tend to avoid: What is each country actually offering to the world? Pakistan trades on the value of a crisis next door; the other trades on the size of its market, the depth of its institutions, and the reach of its technology. Narratives may hide the difference that is visible in the data.
