On most flights, passengers applaud when the aircraft lands smoothly. Few realise that the final few minutes before touchdown are among the most challenging ones in aviation. Imagine trying to guide a 70-tonne aircraft through thick clouds, with only a few seconds to decide whether the runway is exactly where your instruments claim it is.

Until now, that confidence largely came from costly radio equipment installed beside airport runways. On 27 June 2026, however, an IndiGo Airbus A320 rewrote India's aviation history at Udaipur. Instead of relying on traditional ground-based landing aids, it trusted GAGAN, India's indigenous satellite-based augmentation system. The landing looked routine to passengers, but for India's space and aviation ecosystem, it marked the beginning of a future where satellites, rather than runways, become the nation's invisible air traffic guides. It redefined navigation.
